WOLFE ISLAND GARDENS

Located on an 85-acre farm 2 kilometres south of the village of Marysville, Wolfe Island Gardens is a ½ acre intensive market garden serving the Wolfe Island community. Using agroecological methods, the garden provides a wide range of high-quality seasonal vegetables through a Community Supported Agriculture Program, local retail outlets, and a Saturday Farmers Market. The focus at Wolfe Island Gardens has always been about teaching; our goal is to grow on a small scale and sell to a small market base in order to allow students time to learn and develop their skills.

PYKE'S GEOTHERMAL GREENHOUSE

In 2024, Wolfe Island Gardens was asked to manage a large geothermal greenhouse near Horne’s Point on Wolfe Island. The greenhouse uses a design developed by Russ Finch, a retired mailman from Nebraska.

Mr. Finch grows 15 different types of citrus at his Nebraska home with only a small fan to circulate the air.

His design and operation can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD_3_gsgsnk&t=412s.

In 2024 we grew eggplant, peppers, cantaloupe, cucumbers, and tomatoes as well as some bedding plants.

In 2025 bedding plant production will be expanded, and we will experiment with early greens and lettuces.

The greenhouse has great potential, and it will be a learning process for all of us as we continue to develop a planting system for it in 2025.
